Quran Structure

Umm al-Kitab

أُمّ ٱلْكِتَاب · /ʊmː al kɪˈtaːb/

Umm al-Kitab, "Mother of the Book," refers to Al-Fatiha and, in a broader sense, to the preserved source of the Quran itself.

What does Umm al-Kitab mean?

The Quran uses this title in two ways: for Surah Al-Fatiha, considered the summary of the whole Quran, and for al-Lawh al-Mahfuz, the "Preserved Tablet" understood as the origin of all revealed scripture.
