Tajweed Rule

Ikhfa

إِخْفَاء · /ɪxˈfæːʔ/

Ikhfa is a Tajweed rule where a noon sakinah or tanween is pronounced with a hidden, nasalized sound rather than fully voiced.

What does Ikhfa mean?

When followed by one of fifteen specific letters, the noon sound is neither fully pronounced nor fully merged. It is concealed partway, held with ghunna, sitting between clear articulation and full assimilation.
